Recently I started watching this show called the Big Bang Theory where the premise is these four nerds/geeks befriend this pretty blonde and of course they learn things from each other. Now I love the show because its well written, I love the humor and I actually get the jokes especially the smart ones plus the characters are lovable. However I noticed that since the Big Bang Theory aired along with other shows that nerd/geek culture has become mainstream and very profitable.
One day I was walking into Hot Topic and these group of teens were shopping and this girl pick up a Avenged Sevenfold t-shirt and a Game of Thrones tee. So I asked her are you a fan of the band and do you like the show? Her response made me want to kick her out of the store, like seriously. She said no but it the shirts matched these brand new shoes and tights she brought. Since goth and nerd culture has become mainstream there have been a lot of posers (will discuss goth culture mainstream later) wearing clothing and other merchandise because it is now seen as cool.
The new look of geek male/female
Personally I love that people in the geek/nerd culture are being recognized. We aren’t those stereotypes that are constantly potrayed in films we are just like everyone with a passion for one or more fandoms. Cosplay is also getting some good press with with shows like ‘Heros of Cosplay’ on Syfy and recently on ABC a show called ‘The Quest’ has aired which takes fantasy and roleplay to a whole new level.
Despite the fact the mainstream is marketing off of the geek/nerd culture and the are a bunch of posers who now wear the fake glasses, fandom tees, suspenders among other things calling it geek chic. Its nice to have the world appreciate your love of cosplay (even though they still think your weird) buts its nice. This also shows that nerds don’t fit the stereotype that has been portrayed especially when it comes to cosplay. The guys aren’t forty years old with bad acne and loving with his mom or the women are the unattractive one you would avoid. There are all body shapes, sizes and races who enjoy watching Star Trek with the buddies or listening to some j-pop. We are just like everyone else we just have a passion for something cooler than football or Keeping up with the Kardashians.
