I have always heard people especially my friends talk about Game of Thrones. I have never seen the show because mostly I don’t have cable. Anyway starting in August I decided to sit down and finally watch the entire first season of Game of Thrones to see what the big deal is all about and now I know.
Game of Thrones is like a fantasy meets medieval sort of like the Lord of the Rings. So in the show there is a land known as Westeros and in this land there are several kingdoms and of course different houses. Now in King’s Landing is where the house of Bartheron rules over all and the king sits upon the iron throne which is made out of melted swords. Now the problem arises when the king and his wife Cersi Lannister from the House of Lannister stays at the House of Stark in the north. Eddard or Ned Stark is the lord and friends with Rob the current king. Rob wants his buddy to be his right hand but Ned’s wife doesn’t agree but later she recieves a letter from her sister which changes her mind along witn Bran Starks recent accident prompts Ned to take the position.
Now from this moment on some serious things are about to go down. Ned and his two daughters Sansa the oldest and Arrya the youngest go with their father to King’s Landing. Now these two sister are complete opposites. Sansa is more girlish I guess one would say but she is also very naive and easily manipulated. However Arrya is a tomboy and a bit more strong willed than her sister. Ned while the new right hand begins investigating the Lannisters and discovers how cunning & dangerous this family truly is.
In the Lannister family there is Cersi and Jaime, they are twin brother and sister but their close bond is just straight up twincest. Then there is Tyrion the youngest and he is a dwarf and majority of people throughout the show make fun of him because of his size. Now the Tyrion may not have the advantage with height but he has smarts which prove to be very useful especially when keeping his sister and nephew Joffery in line.
Now as season 1 moves on other houses and people are introduced. There is the dothraki, savage warriors who are nomadic horse riders. The nightwatch men who guard the wall from the dangers beyond. Daernarys Tarageyen and her brother the last two of their people from the House of Tarageyen. As the season draws to a close there is a marriage between Khal Drogo leader of the Dothraki and Daernarys, the marriage is short lived when Drogo falls ill and with the use of some blood magic he falls to a vegetative state and his wife suffocates him. Daernarys emerges from the fires of her husbands pyre alive and with three dragons.
Ned discovers that all of Cersi’s children are bastards and not the offspring of the king but her brother Jaime due to the fact that the House of Bartheron all have black hair not blonde. Due to this knowledge he has ,when the king is mortally wounded in a hunting accident Joffery becomes king and sentences Ned Stark to death. Sansa is held hostage at King’s Landing and will be wed to Joffery once she starts menstruating meanwhile her sister is escorted out of the kingdom under the guise of being a young boy.
This show is definitely entertaining and catches ones interest and I believe because of not only the good script writing but the portrayal of the characters by the actors and even though its a fantasy world the treachery, cunning, incest, hunger for power among other things that happens is a reflection on human nature. Looking at our own history there have been things both good and evil that have been done for one to gain money, power, control over the masses and that’s why I think we are drawn to shows such as this.
