Hello Kawaii Metal

After watching a video by The Fine Bros called youtubers react, I was introduced to the band known as babymetal.  The band consist of three members:
Suzuka Nakamoto as “Su-metal”

Yui Mizuno as “Yuimetal”

Moa Kikuchi as “Moametal”

The group was initially formed as a subunit of the female idol group Sakura Gakuin, aiming to realize a “fusion of metal and idol music. According to the band’s producer, Babymetal’s name came to him by as a “divine message”.  It is a play on the words “heavy metal”. “Baby” may indicate cuteness, “metal” – intensity.

The bands’ first indie CD single, titled “Babymetal × Kiba of Akiba”, ranked 3rd in the Oricon weekly indie chart and number one in the Tower Records Shibuya weekly indie ranking. The band’s major debut single “Ijime, Dame, Zettai” sold 19,000 copies in its first week and in the spring of 2013, Suzuka gradurated from junior high and thus gradurated from Sakura Gakuin. However babymetal continued and the band released their second single “Megitsune” in november of that same year.

The band then performed at the “Summer Sonic 2013” rock festival which was held in Tokyo and Osaka in August on the 10th and 12th being the youngest performers to perform at the festival.

Earlier this year, Babymetal released their debut self titled album consisted of 13 tracks. It sold over 37.000 copies in Japan on its first week and debut at number 4 in Oricon and number 2 in Billboard Japan. In march they held a european tour and are the opening act for five shows of Lady Gaga’s artrave: Artpop ball; Gaga also had the famous vocaloid Hatsune Miku open her show.

Babymetal is definitely a unique band and I personally can’t wait for their next album and a north american tour (hopefully my fingers are crossed).
